UD International Scholarship 2024

The Hungarian Government has initiated a pilot program with the objective of offering opportunities to international students who are currently not enrolled in Hungary to pursue their higher education studies in Hungary, including at the University of Debrecen.

The program's mission is to increase the number of international students in international degree programs related to natural sciences, medical and health sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Moreover, the aim is to amplify the involvement of international students in professional internship programs, to facilitate their integration into the Hungarian labor market and to enrich the pool of qualified international students in Hungary.

The program provides:

1. Tuition fee discount

  • For the Medicine and Dentistry programs, the tuition fee discount is maximum 30% of the full annual tuition fee.
  • For all other programs, the tuition fee discount is maximum 90% of the full annual tuition fee.
  • The extent of the discount depends on the academic background and the entrance examination performance of the applicant.

2. Medical insurance

Applicants holding citizenship of the following countries are eligible:

For the Medicine and Dentistry programs:

Denmark, Iceland, Israel, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom

For all other programs:

Deadline

There is no designated deadline for the scholarship application. Applications can be submitted continuously until the scholarship budget and program seat capacities allow. However, the official application deadlines for all University of Debrecen International Degree Programs apply (15 June, 2024).

Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship

How to Apply for the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme?

  • Before submitting your application, please read the current Call for Application carefully (stipendiumhungaricum.hu),
  • In case you are interested contact the sending partner in your country;
  • With the help of the application guide submit all the necessary application documents to the online application system of Tempus Public Foundation (TPF). The application platform will be open from November 15, 2024.
  • Select the University of Debrecen
  • You are entitled to apply for two programmes.

Study in Debrecen (Hungary, Europe) for free with the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship

The Hungarian government provides the Stipendium Hungaricum academic scholarship for international students. Stipendium Hungaricum full scholarship includes:

  • Free tuition for the entire duration of studies.
  • Monthly grant for students of Bachelor, Master or PhD program.
  • Contribution to accommodation
  • Free medical insurance for the entire duration of a BSc, MSc or PhD program.

With the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship you can study at the University of Debrecen for free.

Selection Procedure:

First step: nomination of Sending Partner:

The Sending Partner pre-selects the submitted applications and sends a nomination and a reserve list to TPF.

Second step: the institutional evaluation:

  • Tempus forwards the nominated applications to the University of Debrecen
  • The University of Debrecen conducts the formal check and informs the formally correct applicants about the details (date and method) of the entrance exam/interview.
  • The university forwards the result of the entrance procedure to TPF.

Third step: decision about the scholarship:

The Board of Trustees of TPF awards the scholarship and informs the applicants about the result.

Scholarship for Christian Young People (SCYP)

The Scholarship for Christian Young People (SCYP) is for all Christian students from participating countries. Successful applicants can enjoy multiple benefits during the duration of their degree at the University of Debrecen.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants should be from participating countries.
  • Applicants should have a Letter of Recommendation from the Church.

Available Programs:

Scholarships are available for bachelor’s, master’s, one-tier master’s, and doctoral programs.

Siblings Discount

The University of Debrecen offers siblings discounts to siblings who pursue studies at the university and have an active student status are entitled to a 10% discount on their annual tuition fee each; the discount shall be available until at least two of the siblings have an active student status at the university.

Academic Scholarship

Academic Scholarships, as well as tuition-free reductions, are extended to students who exhibit outstanding academic achievements. Beginning from their second year of study, students have the opportunity to avail academic scholarships based on their performance in the preceding year.

For full-time registered students pursuing medical programs, a minimum grade average of 4.5, and for non-medical programs, a grade average of 4.0 or higher in each of the previous two consecutive semesters, may render them eligible for a tuition fee reduction. The reduction may be up to a maximum of 20% for eligible students each year. This initiative aims to recognize and reward exceptional academic accomplishments, fostering an environment of academic excellence.

Diaspora Scholarship

The Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship was established by the Hungarian Government for those who live in a Hungarian diaspora outside of the European Union and wish to study at a Hungarian higher education institution to develop their personal, professional and cultural relations to Hungary.

The programme aims to support the professional advancement of the scholarship holders with high-quality Hungarian higher education while improving their Hungarian language skills and strengthening their Hungarian identity. After graduation, scholarship holders return to their home country with competitive skills and knowledge that enables them to support their community, preserve Hungarian values and reinforce the relations between the diaspora and Hungary.

The programme provides

  • Tuition-free education: exemption from the payment of tuition fee.
  • Monthly stipend (upon request)
  • Proof of language proficiency
  • Accommodation: dormitory placement OR a monthly contribution of HUF 40 000 to accommodation costs for the whole duration of the scholarship period. (upon request)
  • Medical insurance

The program is open for students with Hungarian identity that needs to be demonstrated in the application.

The Applicant needs to state that he/she has lived minimum 10 years outside Hungary before the submission of his/her application

Furthermore, applicants shall obtain a recommendation from a Hungarian diaspora organization or a Hungarian Diplomatic Representation of the respective country

Applicants need to submit the following documents:

  • A motivation letter (at least 1-page, written by yourself about why you apply for this scholarship)
  • Your school certificate: high school diploma or bachelor/master degree certificate (or a “Declaration about missing document” if you are in your last year)-> secondary school certificates that prove that Applicant has completed the last 4 years of his/her secondary education in a foreign country (not Hungary)
  • School reports / university transcript
  • Proof of language proficiency (or a “Declaration about missing document” if you will receive the result later)
  • Copy of your passport (or national ID, then you will upload your passport by 1 August)
  • For PhD applicants only: 2 recommendations, research plan, supervisor statement
  • Recommendation letter from a Diaspora Organisation or the Hungarian Diplomatic Representation of the respective territory
  • Declaration about missing documents: only two documents can be missing and uploaded later, the school certificate or the language proof (nothing else can be missing!). In this case you must upload a Declaration signed by yourself, listing the missing documents and declaring that you will upload them by 1 August 2022. Without a Declaration the application will be rejected.
