Rankings are one of the first things students check, and one of the easiest things to get wrong. Different organisations measure different things, the numbers change every year, and a modest global position can still mean a university sits in the top few percent of institutions worldwide.
Here's an accurate, current picture of where the University of Debrecen ranks, how it compares with other Hungarian universities, where it performs best by subject, and what it all means for an international student choosing a degree.
We've written this the way we'd explain it to a student sitting in our office: the real numbers, including the years the position went down as well as up, and an honest account of what the figures can and can't tell you about the education you'll receive.
University of Debrecen Ranking at a Glance
| Ranking | Position |
|---|---|
| QS World University Rankings 2027 | =600 |
| QS World University Rankings 2026 | =563 (Hungary's highest-ranked university that year) |
| Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 | 801–1000 |
| THE Europe Teaching Ranking | Among the best 200 universities |
| QS Eastern Europe (Europe University Rankings) | 11th |
| QS Sustainability Ranking | =322 |
| Position among Hungarian universities (QS 2027) | 2nd |
The QS World University Rankings
QS is the most widely referenced ranking, and the one most students mean when they ask about a university's position. For the 2026 edition, QS assessed more than 8,400 higher education institutions from 106 countries and published 1,501 of them.
| QS edition | Position |
|---|---|
| 2022 | 591–600 |
| 2023 | 651–700 |
| 2024 | 671–680 |
| 2025 | =574 |
| 2026 | =563 |
| 2027 | =600 |
The trend over five years is upward: from the 651–700 band in 2023 to the mid-500s, with some movement back in the latest edition. In the QS 2026 rankings, the University of Debrecen rose nine places to become the highest-ranked university in Hungary, with improved scores in institutional sustainability (311th), quality of education (426th) and academic reputation (458th), where it climbed 47 positions.
In the QS 2027 edition, Hungarian universities generally slipped, and Eötvös Loránd University returned to the top national position at 595th, with the University of Debrecen at 600th. The two are effectively neighbours in a list of more than 1,500 institutions.
How Debrecen compares with other Hungarian universities
| University | QS 2027 |
|---|---|
| Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) | 595 |
| University of Debrecen | 600 |
| University of Szeged | 633 |
| Budapest University of Technology and Economics | 711–720 range in the previous edition |
| University of Pécs | 741–750 range in the previous edition |
Hungary has around a dozen institutions in the global rankings. Of roughly 30,000 universities worldwide, 12 Hungarian institutions sit within the top 5%, and three of them, including the University of Debrecen, are within the top 2%.
That's the figure worth holding onto. A position in the 600s out of thousands of ranked institutions, from a global pool of tens of thousands, places the university comfortably in the upper tier worldwide.
Times Higher Education Rankings
THE uses a different method, weighted more heavily toward research citations and teaching environment. In the World University Rankings 2027, the University of Debrecen is placed in the 801–1000 band.
More relevant for students, the university is ranked in the THE Europe Teaching Ranking among the best 200 universities, a ranking built specifically around the quality of the teaching environment rather than research output. For an undergraduate choosing where to study, teaching quality matters more than citation counts.
Subject Rankings: Where Debrecen Is Strongest
Overall institutional rankings average everything a university does. Subject rankings tell you how strong your actual field is, which is usually the more useful number.
In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the University of Debrecen is ranked across several fields:
- Agriculture and Forestry: 251–300, the second-best-ranked Hungarian university in this field.
- Medicine: 351–400, among four Hungarian universities ranked in medical education.
- Life Sciences and Medicine (broad subject area): one of only three Hungarian universities ranked.
- Mathematics: 501–600, third among Hungarian universities.
- Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Computer Science and Information Systems: ranked among Hungarian institutions in each.
If you're applying for medicine, agriculture, biological sciences, or chemistry, these subject positions are a better guide to the strength of your program than the overall number.
Where the University Performs Best
Rankings are built from individual indicators, and some reveal more than the headline position.
International student diversity. This is consistently the university's strongest indicator. It ranked 248th globally for the proportion of international students in the QS 2026 edition, and 268th in 2027, among the world's top 300. With more than 7,800 international students from over 140 countries, this isn't a statistical quirk: it reflects a genuinely international campus, which matters when you're the one arriving from abroad.
International research partnerships. Hungarian universities perform strongly here, and the University of Debrecen placed 439th globally. The university maintains 874 bilateral agreements with 615 partner institutions across 44 countries.
Sustainability. Ranked =322 in the QS Sustainability Ranking, with institutional sustainability among the indicators that improved most in the 2026 edition.
Research volume. The university conducts 14–15% of all research carried out in Hungary, and is one of the country's five elite research universities.
What Rankings Actually Mean for You
Here's the honest version, because the number alone can mislead in both directions.
What rankings are useful for. They indicate research strength, academic reputation among other academics, and institutional scale. They also matter in practical ways: some employers and scholarship schemes reference them, and some national authorities use ranking bands when assessing foreign qualifications.
What rankings don't measure. They say almost nothing about the quality of your specific program, the support international students receive, clinical or practical training facilities, class sizes, or how easy it is to live and study in the city. QS weights academic reputation surveys heavily, which favours older, larger, English-speaking institutions in wealthy countries.
What to look at alongside the ranking:
- Accreditation of your program. For medicine, the University of Debrecen's general medicine program was the first in Hungary accredited according to the criteria of the World Federation for Medical Education, with accreditation running to 2030. For students planning the USMLE route to the US, that accreditation matters far more than a ranking position.
- Teaching facilities. Two teaching hospitals with more than 2,900 beds, over 500 research laboratories, 8 campuses and 7 libraries.
- Experience with international students. English-taught programs since 1987, which is nearly four decades of teaching students exactly like you.
- Subject strength, as covered above.
- Cost and total value. A ranked European university at Hungarian tuition levels is a different proposition from a similarly ranked university in Western Europe or North America.
A note on how rankings move. A shift of 30 or 40 places in a list of 1,500 reflects methodology changes and the performance of other institutions as much as any change inside a university. Between 2026 and 2027, Hungarian universities broadly slipped, which says more about the comparative field than about teaching at any one institution. Judge a university on a multi-year trend, not a single edition.
How to Read a Ranking Properly
Three habits will save you from the most common mistakes students make with rankings.
1. Check which edition you're reading. Rankings are named for the year ahead, so the '2027' tables were published in mid-2026. A site quoting a position without naming the edition is often two or three years out of date, which is why you'll see the University of Debrecen listed anywhere between the 500s and the 670s depending on where you look.
2. Compare like with like. QS and Times Higher Education measure different things and produce very different results for the same university, which is why Debrecen appears at 600 in one and in the 801–1000 band in the other. Neither is wrong. QS leans on academic reputation surveys; THE leans on research citations and teaching environment.
3. Read the band, not the digit. The gap between 595th and 600th is statistically meaningless in a list of 1,501 institutions drawn from more than 8,400 assessed. Universities within a few dozen places of each other are, for practical purposes, peers.
The University Behind the Numbers
Rankings compress a whole institution into one figure. The underlying profile is more informative:
- More than 34,000 students, including over 7,800 international students from more than 140 countries
- 13 faculties across 8 campuses, with 7 libraries and more than 500 research laboratories
- 2 teaching hospitals with over 2,900 beds
- More than 200 professors and over 1,300 associate and assistant professors
- English-taught programs since 1987, with over 100 programs taught fully in English today
- One of Hungary's five elite research universities, conducting 14–15% of the country's research volume
These are the things that shape your day-to-day experience: who teaches you, where you train, and how many people around you are also studying far from home.
