Is an MD from Hungary the Same as an MBBS?

Many international students search for 'MBBS in Hungary' because MBBS is the medical degree they know from their home country. Hungarian universities award a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree instead. It is a single, six-year, integrated program (called a one-tier master's degree in Hungary) that takes you from basic sciences to clinical practice.

In practical terms, the Hungarian MD is the equivalent of an MBBS. Both qualify you as a medical doctor after six years of study. The difference is mainly in the name, not in the level of qualification.

            Why Study MBBS in Hungary?

Hungary has become one of Europe's most popular destinations for international medical students. Here are the main reasons.

English-taught programs with a long track record

You don't need to speak Hungarian to study medicine. The entire program at the University of Debrecen is taught in English, and the university has been training international doctors this way for almost four decades.

A European degree at a lower cost

Tuition for medicine in Hungary is significantly lower than in the UK, the US, Canada or Australia. Living costs, especially outside Budapest, are also moderate by European standards. For many families, this makes a European medical education realistic.

Admission based on an entrance exam

Instead of relying only on national rankings or highly competitive national tests, admission at the University of Debrecen is based on your academic background plus the university's own entrance exam and interview. Students who have the knowledge and motivation get a fair chance to prove it.

                    A pathway to practising abroad

Hungarian medical degrees meet European Union standards. The University of Debrecen's medical programs are accredited by internationally recognised bodies, and a Kaplan USMLE preparation course is available to students who plan to practise in the United States.

                      A safe and student-friendly city

Debrecen is Hungary's second-largest city, with a large international student community and a lower cost of living than the capital. Read more in our guide: Is Hungary safe for international students?

Why Choose the University of Debrecen for MBBS?

When you compare medical universities in Hungary, look for specific, verifiable strengths rather than general claims.

MBBS in Hungary Eligibility and Entry Requirements

The University of Debrecen keeps its requirements clear. Here is what international applicants need.

                            Academic requirements

To apply for Medicine, you should have completed (or be in the final year of) secondary school with strong results in science subjects. As a general guide, applicants need at least 60% in Biology and in Chemistry or Physics.

                              English language requirements

The program is taught in English, so you need to show that you can study in English. Proof may include an IELTS or TOEFL score, or evidence that your previous education was in English. Your English is also assessed during the entrance interview. For more detail, see our guide to language proficiency tests for Hungarian universities.

                                Documents you will need

                                Typical documents include:

                                • A completed online application form
                                • Your secondary school certificate and transcripts (or predicted grades if you are in your final year)
                                • A copy of your passport
                                • Proof of English proficiency (if required)
                                • Payment of the application fee

Didn't meet the marks? The medical foundation route

If your science marks are below the direct-entry requirement, you still have a path into medicine. Students with marks roughly between 50% and 60% can begin with a preparatory program, such as the Foundation Program or the Basic Medicine Course, which strengthens your Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and medical English before you progress to the MD program.

This route is also useful if you performed well at school but want extra preparation before starting a demanding six-year degree.

The University of Debrecen Medical Entrance Exam

Every applicant to Medicine takes the university's entrance examination. It has two parts.

                                      1. Written test. The written exam covers Biology (compulsory) and Chemistry or Physics (your choice). Questions may include multiple-choice questions, definitions, and calculations.

                                        2. Interview. An oral interview assesses your subject knowledge, your English communication skills, and your motivation to study medicine.

                                          Possible outcomes.

Depending on your overall performance, you may be:

                                            • admitted directly to the first year of Medicine,
                                            • offered a place on the Basic Medicine Course (a preparatory route), or
                                            • not admitted in the current cycle.

How to prepare: review the core topics in Biology and your chosen second science, practise written answers under timed conditions, and prepare to explain clearly why you want to become a doctor. You can download official entrance exam sample papers to see the style of questions.
