Before committing several years and a significant amount of money to a degree abroad, every student and parent asks the same question: will this degree be recognised at home and in the countries where I might want to work?
It's the right question to ask, and it deserves a careful answer rather than a marketing one. This guide explains how recognition actually works, what accreditation the University of Debrecen holds, how recognition differs between medical and non-medical degrees, and, most importantly, how to check the rules that apply to you before you apply.
One point before we start: no university can guarantee that you will be licensed to practise in a particular country. Each country's licensing authority decides, and the rules can change. What a university can do is hold the accreditations those authorities look for, and tell you clearly where to check.
What 'Recognition' Actually Means
People use one word for three different things. Understanding the difference saves a lot of confusion.
1. Institutional accreditation. This is whether the university and its programs are officially accredited in their own country. Hungarian higher education is accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee (HAC), the national quality assurance body.
2. Academic recognition. This is whether another country accepts your degree as equivalent to one of its own qualifications, for example, when you apply for a Master's, a PhD, or a job that requires a degree. This is usually handled by a national recognition centre or credential evaluation service.
3. Professional recognition (licensure). This is whether you can legally practise a regulated profession, such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, or engineering. This is decided by the professional council or licensing authority in the country where you want to work, and it usually involves an exam, supervised practice, or both, no matter where you studied.
The most important takeaway: for regulated professions, the degree is only one part. Almost every country requires foreign-trained graduates to pass a licensing exam or registration process. That is normal, and it applies to graduates of universities worldwide.
The University of Debrecen's Accreditation
The University of Debrecen is a state-recognised public university in Hungary, and an EU member state's higher education system. Its degrees are issued under Hungarian law and quality assurance rules.
Medical education and WFME accreditation
The University of Debrecen was the first university in Hungary to have its general medicine program accredited according to the criteria of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). The accreditation was awarded by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee, whose activities are recognised by WFME. The accreditation runs for eight years, until 22 April 2030, provided the WFME criteria continue to be met.
This is not a symbolic distinction. It has a direct, practical consequence for graduates.
Why WFME accreditation matters for the United States
To practise medicine in the US, international graduates must pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and obtain certification from ECFMG. Since 2024, only graduates of medical schools accredited by an agency recognised by WFME are eligible for that pathway.
Because the University of Debrecen's medical education is accredited by a WFME-recognised agency, its graduates meet this accreditation requirement. Note that ECFMG's policy also involves the school's listing details in the World Directory of Medical Schools, so applicants should check the current requirements directly with ECFMG/Intealth before making plans.
One caution that's often misreported online: being listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools is not the same as being recognised or endorsed by it. The directory itself states that a listing does not denote recognition, accreditation or endorsement. What matters is the accreditation status shown in the listing, not the listing alone.
Other recognitions
The University of Debrecen's medical programs are also associated with recognition by bodies including the World Health Organization, the New York State Education Department and the Medical Board of California .
Some sources list further recognitions by councils in other countries.
Our recommendation: treat any list of country recognitions, including ours, as a starting point for your own checks, not as a guarantee. Always confirm directly with the authority in the country where you plan to practise.
Recognition Within the European Union
Hungary is an EU member state, so degrees awarded by Hungarian state-recognised universities are issued within the EU's higher education framework, which uses the same degree structure (Bachelor's, Master's, doctorate) and ECTS credit system used across Europe. This makes it straightforward to have your qualification understood when you apply for further study or work in Europe.
For regulated professions such as medicine, the EU has directives on the recognition of professional qualifications between member states, though procedures, language requirements, and registration steps still apply in each country.
The USMLE Route and Preparation Support
For students who plan to pursue residency in the United States, the University of Debrecen offers access to Kaplan USMLE preparation alongside the medical curriculum.
Doing USMLE preparation alongside your degree can be a practical advantage, because the exam covers material taught across several years of study. Even so, US residency is competitive, and preparation is only one part of the picture, so plan early and speak to graduates who have taken this route.
What About Non-Medical Degrees?
Recognition works differently for degrees in engineering, computer science, business, agriculture, and the sciences.
Most of these professions are not regulated in the same way as medicine. For jobs in IT, business, data science, or many engineering roles, employers typically care about the degree itself, your skills and your experience, not about a licensing exam. A Hungarian state-recognised degree is issued within the EU framework, which employers and universities internationally are used to assessing.
Where a profession is regulated (for example, certain engineering roles that require a professional engineer licence, or architecture, pharmacy and nursing), a registration or examination process usually applies to foreign-trained graduates. Check with the relevant professional body in the country where you want to work.
For further study, if you plan to apply for a Master's or PhD in another country, the receiving university will assess your qualification, often through a credential evaluation service. A degree from a state-recognised EU university is generally straightforward to evaluate, but the university you apply to makes the final decision.
The University's Standing
Recognition is partly formal accreditation and partly track record. The University of Debrecen has:
- Taught programs in English since 1987, so its international curriculum is well established.
- More than 7,800 international students from over 140 countries, out of more than 34,000 students in total.
- Two teaching hospitals with over 2,900 beds and more than 500 research laboratories.
- 874 bilateral agreements with 615 partner institutions in 44 countries.
A long history of training international graduates means authorities in many countries have assessed the university's qualifications before, which usually makes the process more predictable.
How to Check Recognition for Your Own Country Before You Apply
This is the most useful section in this guide, so do these four things before you commit.
1. Identify the right authority
For medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and nursing, it's your country's medical, dental, pharmacy or nursing council. For other professions, it's the relevant professional body. For academic recognition, it's your national recognition centre or ministry of education.
2. Ask three specific questions
- Is a medical (or other) degree from a Hungarian state-recognised university accepted for registration?
- What extra steps apply to foreign-trained graduates (screening tests, licensing exams, internships, language requirements)?
- Are there any conditions about the accreditation status of the university, the length of the program, or clinical training hours?
3. Get the answer in writing
Rules change, and advice from agents or forums can be out of date or simply wrong. A written answer or an official web page from the authority itself is worth far more than a promise from anyone selling you a service.
4. Ask us for help
We can tell you exactly what the University of Debrecen's accreditation status is, provide official documentation about the program, and point you to the right authorities to contact. What we won't do is promise you a licence, because no university or office can.
Questions Worth Asking Any University You're Considering
If you're comparing universities, ask each one:
- Which agency accredits your medical program, and is that agency recognised by WFME?
- When does your accreditation expire?
- What documentation will I receive with my degree (diploma supplement, transcripts, curriculum details) to support recognition applications?
- What support do you provide to graduates applying for licensing exams?
- How many of your graduates have been licensed in the countries I'm considering?
Universities that answer these clearly, with evidence, are usually the ones worth trusting.
Ask Our Team About Recognition in Your Country
Recognition rules differ by country and change over time, so the safest approach is to check before you apply, not after you graduate.
Tell us which country you want to practise or work in, and we'll help you find the right authority to contact and provide the official documentation about the program you're considering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Hungarian degree recognised internationally?
Hungarian state-recognised universities award degrees within the EU higher education framework, which is widely understood internationally. For regulated professions such as medicine, recognition also depends on the licensing rules of the country where you want to practise, and these usually involve an exam or registration process for foreign-trained graduates.
Is the University of Debrecen's medical program WFME accredited?
Yes. It was the first in Hungary to be accredited according to WFME criteria, by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee, whose activities are recognised by WFME. The accreditation is valid until 22 April 2030, provided the criteria continue to be met.
Can University of Debrecen graduates take the USMLE?
Since 2024, ECFMG requires applicants to have graduated from a medical school accredited by an agency recognised by WFME. The University of Debrecen's medical education is accredited by such an agency. Confirm the current eligibility requirements directly with ECFMG/Intealth before planning this route.
Will my degree be accepted by my home country's medical council?
Most countries require foreign-trained graduates to pass a licensing or screening examination before registration, regardless of where they studied. Contact your national council before you apply, and ask for their rules in writing.
Does being listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools mean a school is recognised?
No. The directory states that a listing does not denote recognition, accreditation or endorsement. What matters is the accreditation information shown in the listing and the rules of the authority you are applying to.
Are non-medical degrees from the University of Debrecen recognised?
A state-recognised EU university awards degrees in fields such as engineering, IT and business and are generally straightforward for employers and universities to assess. If your profession is regulated in your target country, a registration process may apply.
Does the university guarantee that I can practise in my country?
No university can guarantee licensure anywhere. Licensing decisions belong to each country's authority. What the university can provide is accredited education and the documentation you need for your application.
